fiction-is-not-reality
Anonymous asked: I don't know why there so much discourse over archive of our own? If it cause they allow dark contact like non-con, incest, underage characters in nsfw writing, etc. I'm new to the whole fanfiction thing but aren't others fanfic sites allows those type of fics too, what makes ao3 get so much hate on this hellsite?
Actually no, it isn’t at all automatic that other sites allow the same content that ao3 does. Ao3 was born out of the infamous LJ and ffnet purges where thousands of works were deleted out of the blue, and writers were left with the choice of sticking to strict rules on what they could or couldn’t write, or leave.
You can check my “fandom history” tag to get context on this side of the discourse.
As far as I can tell, antis seem to dislike Archive of our Own because:
- It allows fanfic antis deem problematic.
- It doesn’t give a fuck about what antis deem problematic and pretty much ignores antis reporting fic to abuse when the fics aren’t breaking any of the archive’s rules.
- Archive of our Own is a very popular fanfic archive site.
Antis cannot control AO3. Antis cannot make AO3 do what they want AO3 to do. Antis get mad. Antis throw a tantrum.
Also, antis can and will get banned from the site for a lot of their tactics, such as harassment in the comments, troll fic, and plagiarism.
In essence: antis are mad that Ao3 doesn’t tolerate their shenanigans and are now trying to have the FBI shut AO3 down. Of course, that’s also not gonna work, and then we’re back to antis stomping their feet, throwing themselves on the floor and screaming. My tactic when my kid was two and did this: sit down someplace and wait it out. Read something. Maybe some nice, nasty fic ;)
