I answered this one here, but I’ll bring up another point that’s honestly just been bugging me forever: why didn’t Reiner just keep Eren in the Armored Titan’s mouth while they were trying to get away…? Like Annie did - it seems like a much better option and harder for the Scouts to take him back… Idk if this is even something I’d change, per se, more like I’d be curious to see how it would have changed things and if Reiner and Bert could actually have taken him back lol

One possible justification for that could be that when we see Reiner attack the wall in his titan form in episode two of the anime / chapter two of the manga, after the attack, he seems to be breathing fire / super heated steam. We all know titans have a much higher body temperature than humans. I always figured that with all its plating, the armoured titan cannot vent the heat that builds up internally when it fights as effectively as, say, the Female titan’s form can. That is why it is shown escaping through its mouth under much higher pressure  / heat because that is the only way it can vent that heat. Maybe Reiner didn’t carry Eren in his mouth for extended periods of time because with all the heated steam / flames building up inside of his mouth, they were concerned about him becoming too injured. He can still die, after all.

Or maybe these are just the things I tell myself to help me sleep at night when it comes to this canon.

HmmmMMMM an excellent point! This would make a lot of sense actually! And it definitely seems like he does that venting thing more when he’s active, so I’m sure running (and possibly fighting) would have pushed that option completely off the table. Maaaaybe Bert could have survived, given his high tolerance to heat, but it still doesn’t solve the Eren issue and, as @thecolossustitan said, then Ymir wouldn’t have heard him, then gone with them, then given back the Jaw Titan, etc. etc.

I thought about the armored titan’s mouth being too hot, but the colossal titan is known for its heat and Bertholdt was able to carry Ymir inside uninjured. Thought it was for a short period of time.
