I wonder where the break happened that such wide swaths of younger fans don’t grasp fandom things that used to be unspoken understandings. That fic readers are expected to know fiction from reality,  that views expressed in fic are not necessarily those of the author, that the labels, tags and warnings on various kinkfics are also the indication that they were created for titillation and not much more, please use responsibly as per all pornography. The ‘problem’ isn’t that so-called ‘problematic’ fic exists but that some of the audience is being stupid, irresponsible, at worst criminal, at best not old enough to be in the audience to begin with. And that’s on the consumer, not the author who told you via labels, tags, ratings, warnings and venues what their fic was about and what it was for.

I can’t stress enough how important this post is

*puts on fandom elder hat*

What I don’t understand is–I joined fandom more than ten years ago, when I was 13. I was lying about my age from the beginning and reading things I probably shouldn’t have, but I was also a kid who had spent my whole life in religious school and was super confused about my own sexuality.

And yet I managed not to judge anyone for it? If I found something I didn’t like, or freaked me out, or grossed me or, I would close a tab and walk away. And this was on ft.net and other sites where tagging wasn’t as great as it is now. But none of those decisions were moral based. It’s like showing up to a free ice cream party and burning the whole thing down because you don’t like strawberry.

Kids- if you want to be in adult spaces, act like an adult. That’s it.

Beautiful post.As someone who have been in fandoms for over 15 years and saw many changes through time,it is certain that these days fandoms went through a serious transformation. Is it good?Is it bad? Both, change is inevitable. But there are basic fandom rules that have always remained the same and ‘don’t like don’t read’/’ship and let ship’/ ’be responsible for your own fic consumption’/’don’t judge and kinkshame’/’understand that there are real people behind nicknames’/’there is NO fandom police/ will stay here forever.

Because no matter how spoiled the young fans are,who grew up with everything (in fandom terms) given to them on a silver platter, cut to pieces and clearly labeled ‘kink/fluff/there are cats in a fic’ and who still find pretty much everything to be problematic because ‘I don’t like it and think your fic is wrong and thats why it shouldn’t exist’ reasoning - common sense will always prevail. Because luckily fanfiction writers will never stop writing, they are simply stronger and fanfiction can’t be stopped. It is the backbone of every fandom and without it fandoms cannot function properly and die out. So kids, learn the rules and embrace the diversity because ALL fanfiction has the right exist and be published. And ffs learn to deal with something you don’t like without attacking the writers and whining later. You’re responsible for you,not anyone else.

I 100% agree with all of this. I also think a bridge should be built. As in, the prevalence of certain content warnings is a good thing. I’ll always do my best to warn for sensitive subject matter that could upset someone and trigger a past trauma. And I do believe we should be respectful of that.

HOWEVER, it seems antis view these writers as demonic hellspawn writing this stuff for the lulz. And that they must have no experience or understanding of XX thing or why it might be upsetting. Which the vast majority do. And I can assure you many have content they want to avoid as well. I do, and have no qualms with people disturbed by incest, underage etc. I do have qualms with being called all manner of awful things for creating something they can easily avoid.
